Rwamwanja Refugee & Host Community Integrated Project

Shared Path Uganda SPU, in partnership with the ministry of gender labour and social development, implemented a 12-month livelihoods project targeting 800 refugee and host community households in Rwamwanja Settlement, Kamwenge District.

The project provided vocational skills training in tailoring, carpentry, and Agro processing to 400 youth and women, established and formalised 20 Village Savings and Loan Associations VSLAs, and offered start-up kits + business mentorship to 200 beneficiaries. Through market linkages and cooperative formation, the project increased household incomes by 20% and reduced dependence on humanitarian aid, promoting self-reliance and social cohesion between refugees and Ugandan nationals in line with the CRRF framework.

Additionally, Shared Path Uganda; thought the same project addressed critical ‘WASH’ gaps affecting 2,000 residents in Rwamwanja. Over 12 months, the project construct 40 household latrines with handwashing facilities, and trained 40 Community Health Workers on hygiene promotion.

Shared Path Uganda conducted door to door, and community awareness campaigns on communicable diseases and hand-washing practice. A key innovation is the formation of village Committees with 50% women leadership to manage and maintain access to public health information.

This will reduce poor hygiene in homes and schools and ensure sustainable WASH services aligned with SDG 6 and UNHCR standards.
